Matchbook Traveler

San Diego September 2011

This year our trip to San Diego coincides with a business trip.  After we arrived mid-morning on Saturday, we stopped at one of our favorites, the Red Sails Inn, for breakfast on the waterfront.  Then we headed to Motel Mediteran in Escondido.  After a weekend visiting family, we went to Old Town for lunch at the Old Town Mexican Cafe (multi-color box).  The next day we hit The Black for a cigar on the way to Cabrillo National Park at Point Loma.  Then, it was on to Saska's for lunch and a multi-color 30-strike matchbook.  On Wednesday, it was the Longboard Grill for lunch and another multi-color matchbook and then to the Catamaran Resort, which has a 30-strike matchbook.  A great dinner with my cousin and his wife was outside, right on the beach, at The Beach House in Cardiff-by-the-Sea.  After business meetings on Thursday, we enjoyed dinner in Del Mar with Doug Fouquet, president of the San Diego Matchcover Club.  We went first to the Poseidon, but with an hour wait, we went on to Bully's.  Friday, after a day of business, we had another great dinner, this time at The Marine Room (slim box) in La Jolla -- again right on the water with the waves lapping just below the floor-to-ceiling wall of glass.   After the final business meetings, Saturday lunch was good deli at City Delicatessen.  We stopped at the Excalibur Cigar & Wine Bar and possibly got the last two multi-color matchboxes.  They found two used ones for us and were bringing out the generic boxes for the next customers.  It was on to Soledad Natural Area for a fantastic view of La Jolla and the San Diego area.  Sunday was a visit to the San Diego Zoo, truly among the best.  Monday, in Coronado, it was lunch at McP's for our last matchbooks (30-strike) of the trip.
