Matchbook Traveler

New York City Jan2010

For the second year in a row, I joined some friends for a Saturday afternoon matchbook hunt on Martin Luther King weekend.  We started at Bar Pitti in the Village but with a 30-minute wait, we had to move on but we did pick up a matchbox each.  We ended up for lunch at Stand, a disappointment as it no longer has matches with its name.  From there, we headed to SoHo and Tribeca for more eating and drinking (or was it more drinking and some eating?).  We stopped first at Lure, still a great place for fish or just to stop for a drink and still with a matchbox.  From there, it was on to Toad Hall, a true bar in the Manhattan tradition.  Next it was Ideya, a fun Latin bistro for hot chocolate for me, beer or cola for others.  Broome Street Bar is as popular for its food as it is for its bar.  We had to stop at Circa Tabac for a beer in New York City’s favorite spot where one can still legally smoke and pick up another matchbox.  anotheroom has a tremendous beer selection.  I tried a South Korean beer on tap and picked up a square box.  Our last successful stop was the Bubble Room for a light dinner and another square box.  A good afternoon for matchboxes and matchbooks in New York City.
